Police crack down on protest against inflation in central Almaty, Kazakhstan

According to the authorities, the protest was interrupted by the police because prior authorization was not granted for its realization.

A demonstration was suppressed by police in the central region of Almaty, capital of Kazakhstan, on Tuesday (6). The protests were fueled by high inflation and popular dissatisfaction with the growing Chinese influence in the country, according to Radio Free Europe (RFE).

The organizer of the demonstration is Zhanbolat Mamai, leader of a group that aims to create a new political party in the country, the Democratic Party. According to the authorities, the protest was interrupted by the police because prior authorization was not granted for its realization.

Police have set up barriers to stop the marchers advancing, and some of them say they suffered minor injuries in the midst of pushing and shoving. Inga Imanbai, the protest leader's wife, says three people were detained by police forces.

Mamai says the government prevents him formalizing the party because only acronyms loyal to the government are allowed. The Ministry of Justice allowed the creation of the Democratic Party in December 2020, but the first congress was suspended due to the arrest of some members. The legislation requires that a party can only be formed if the founding congress has more than a thousand participants.

The leader himself has been detained by the police in previous demonstrations. He has also been accused of money laundering and says the charges are a way for the government to pressure him to desist opposition.

Hunger strike

Dozens of activists have been on hunger strike since June 19 in several cities across the country. They are calling for the cancellation of court rulings that label their actions as extremist and that banned the opposition Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan (DVK) movement and the associated party Koshe. Many of them have been arrested in recent years for criticism of the Kazakh government and party militancy.

Human rights groups say Kazakhstan's legislation violates international standards. This is because, despite the Constitution of the Central Asian country guaranteeing its citizens the right to promote public events, the law provides for criminal action for those who organize and participate in rallies who have not obtained prior permission the authorities.
