WHO approves emergency use of CoronaVac

With the decision, people vaccinated with two doses of the immunizing agent will be able to enter the European Union with the reopening of borders

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just approved the emergency use of CoronaVac. The vaccine against Covid-19 was developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac and is manufactured in Brazil by the Butantan Institute.

With the decision, the vaccine can be used by all international instruments, such as the Covax Facility, which authorizes the inclusion of the immunizing agent in the global consortium, which is currently facing a lack of doses.

The measure also means that people vaccinated with the two doses of CoronaVac will be allowed to travel to Europe within the EU's new border-opening scheme.

In a statement, WHO stated that CoronaVac meets international standards for safety, efficacy and manufacturing. The entity recommended the use of the vaccine in people over 18 years of age in the immunization scheme with two doses, spaced two to four weeks apart (as is done in Brazil).

The WHO also points out that the vaccine's efficacy results show that it prevented severe cases of Covid-19 in 100% of the cases studied.

It is the second Chinese vaccine to receive the green light the WHO, and the sixth approved by the UN agency, which had already given the approval to Pfizer, Moderna, Sinopharm, AstraZeneca and Janssen. The decision was already expected by the countries, after the tests and protocols were sent to the WHO.
