UN: DR Congo volcano puts 280,000 children at risk of displacement

Fonte UNICEF

The UN Children's Fund, UNICEF, reported that around 400,000 people, including 280,000 children, may be forced to move due to the eruption of a volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The country's authorities advise residents on the outskirts of the city of Goma to abandon their homes due to the danger of new eruptions Mount Nyiragongo.

Scratchs

Unicef cited government actions to protect those living in the Red Zone and warned of the greater risk suffered by children in the event of a mass evacuation.

UNICEF representative in the country, Edouard Beigbeder, said that "whenever large groups of people are displaced in a short period of time, the dangers to children increase."

Beigbeder listed issues of protection, nutrition and health risks, including waterborne diseases, especially cholera, for children in transit.

Thousands of people leaving Goma head to the nearby town of Sake, 25 km away, an area prone to cholera outbreaks and at least 19 suspected cases have been reported.

Beigbeder said that with the increasing danger of an epidemic, UNICEF is calling for urgent international help to avert a catastrophe.

Displaced

Thousands fled Goma after the May 22 eruption, and the government's order for residents of 10 Goma neighborhoods to move has sparked a new exodus.

Many made the journey on foot, carrying mattresses and kitchen utensils, while others escaped by car or motorcycle.
